Mobility to Industry

Beyond Billabong’s Mobility to Industry program is a life-skilling and pre-employment training course focused on empowering Indigenous people as they prepare for the workplace.  It motivates and encourages its participants through the development of their self-esteem and confidence in a hands-on, practical environment of success and personal achievement. Beyond Billabong partners with some of Australia’s leading companies who have identified job opportunities within their organisation, selected suitable Indigenous candidates and who have created sustainable models for Indigenous employment.

The 4-week course focuses on the attitudes and core values of Respect, Safety and Self-esteem through the creation of a safe, fun and supportive environment.

The Core Learning Outcomes are based around the industry skills of:

Horsemanship & Livestock handling
This component not only gives the young men and women skills in the rural industry, but also develops a new practical perspective on human interactions.  For participants, the understanding, tolerance, and patience that is essential to effective horsemanship is carried across into everyday relationships.

Leatherwork
The Leatherwork gives the participants the ability to create something useful that they can take home.  It allows to them to succeed and achieve in a very practical way.

Visual Indigenous Art
This part of the program is essential to the personal development of the individual.  It allows participants to experience a strong part of their culture and heritage and to express themselves through this medium.  The artwork can either be taken home or donated to the Beyond Billabong Foundation which has been set up to provide scholarships for Indigenous Youth.

Computing
This introductory course focuses on the basic functions of Word, Powerpoint, the internet and email. Participants also partake in budget and real life problem solving exercises. It is paced at a standard that aligns itself with the ability level of the individuals in the group.

Vehicle Operations
The young men and women learn to fully operate motorbikes and 4WD’s in a range of terrains and conditions.  This part of the program builds the participant’s confidence as they tackle new obstacles and encourage each other from the back seat of a troupie. It also provides them skills necessary in the workplace.

Social and Community Awareness
City orienteering, cooking classes, volunteer community programs, sexual health, health & nutrition, and a variety of other experiences and presentations provide the participants with an awareness of their contribution and interactions within society.
