Key Success Drivers
Loving safe and caring environment
Provision of a loving, safe and caring environment is an essential element of program delivery. It is essential to have the feeling of safety to enable personal problems to be brought out into the open and meaningfully dealt with.
Extraordinary people
The key to ensuring that Beyond Billabong continues to change people's lives and in some cases save their lives is the involvement of extraordinary people. Beyond Billabong programs expose the participants to other Aboriginal and non Aboriginal persons who have had shared experiences, both positive and negative, and who have not only survived but had successful lives. Mentors and Instructors are inducted into Beyond Billabong’s programs to ensure that our our values are maintained.
The use of extraordinary people is essential - people who have met the course objectives in their own lives and continue to do so and have the passion and ability to guide and facilitate learning for participants.
Mentoring
The introduction of positive role models for program participants and the support provided to participants after the programs is a key commitment of Beyond Billabong. Mentors join in all activities during the four week program and stay on campus for the duration. They are available for support for participants 24 hours a day.
Aboriginal Culture
Recognition of Aboriginal culture is an important part of the programs. This is achieved by:
The involvement of elders – formal welcome to country
Increasing knowledge of participants regarding:
- Tribal boundaries
- History of the People
- Significant cultural sites
Including cultural education:
- Aboriginal History and implications today
- Aboriginal people – who are we?
